After leaving her job of 12 years, Nancy made a pivotal decision that would not only change her own life, but impact countless others in her community. With newfound time and a desire to give back, she reached out to one organization: Food & Friends. It was the first—and only—place she called. From that moment on, she’s been a dedicated volunteer, delivering more than just meals.
A Place That Feels Like Home
Over the years, Nancy has seen Food & Friends grow and evolve, but one thing has remained consistent: the unwavering support from staff and delivery coordinators. For 15 years, she’s shown up every Thursday morning ready to deliver meals to those in need.
“Food & Friends is an extremely professional place to volunteer,” she shares. “No matter who I’ve worked with, the support has always been excellent.”
That level of organization and care doesn’t go unnoticed. Nancy points out how well-run every aspect of her experience has been—from the ready-to-go deliveries to the consistently helpful staff.
Moments That Stick with You
When asked about her most memorable experience, Nancy immediately recalls a holiday surprise from a longtime client: a mini-rose bush and a heartfelt card. She carried that card around with her delivery instructions for weeks—it was a tangible reminder of the real human connection her volunteer work creates.
And it’s not just about gifts. Simple greetings can be just as powerful. “When I call my clients to let them know I’m on the way and they answer, ‘Hi Nancy’—it makes it all so very worthwhile.”

The Bigger Picture
Nancy wishes more people knew the scope of what Food & Friends does—the number of clients served, the individualized care taken with dietary needs, and the sheer size of the delivery area.
“There are so many people in need, and Food & Friends reaches them with so much thoughtfulness.”
That mission resonates with Nancy deeply. Volunteering isn’t just a part of her week—it helps shape it.
“I love having the consistency of my regular shift,” she says. “It brings structure, and I see the impact I’m making. I’m even thinking about adding another shift!”
A Reliable Face, A Bright Spot in the Week
For Nancy’s clients, Thursdays mean more than just meal deliveries—they’re a moment of connection.
“My clients count on me to arrive at a consistent time. I think they truly look forward to my visits,” she explains. “It’s a bright spot for many of them.”
That relationship is mutual. It’s what keeps Nancy going year after year.
“They’ve told me they missed me when I’ve been on vacation. We have a special Thursday morning relationship.”
Advice for Future Volunteers
For those thinking about volunteering but feeling unsure, Nancy has practical advice: try a kitchen shift or two to ease in.
“Even though I didn’t start that way, it’s a great way to get a feel for the organization. I knew right away I wanted to be a delivery driver, but everyone’s path is different.”
Ultimately, Nancy believes what volunteers bring to an organization like Food & Friends is passion—passion to help, to serve, and to show up.
And for those wondering how to stay motivated over time?
“It’s the people,” Nancy says without hesitation. “Their warmth and appreciation inspire me every week.”
