The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated existing health disparities and inequities in Washington, DC and neighboring Prince George’s County, Maryland, underscoring the role of social factors in determining individual health and well-being. Populations and neighborhoods in the District of Columbia and Prince George’s County that have disproportionate poverty, less education, poorer health, and inadequate access to health and social resources are also lagging in COVID-19 vaccination efforts, which is our best tool to protect against COVID-19. These communities are largely comprised of Black and Latinx residents, which are consistently burdened by health inequities in this region. Community health workers (CHWs) are uniquely positioned to provide information and support to assist their fellow community members to access and receive COVID-19 vaccinations. The Institute for Public Health Innovation (IPHI) and a group of nine collaborating clinics and community-based organizations are partnering through the project, Community Health Workers Expanding COVID-19 Vaccine Access in the District of Columbia and Prince George’s County, Maryland, to scale up the role of CHWs in targeted COVID-19 vaccination campaigns to ensure equitable protection against COVID-19.
