As we count down to Chef’s Best 2025, we’re thrilled to spotlight one of this year’s participating chefs, Chef Katarina of The Duck & the Peach. With a deep passion for nourishing food and a heart for community, Chef Katarina Petonito or Chef Kat, brings both soul and skill to everything she creates. We caught up with her to learn more about her journey, her philosophy, and what guests can expect at this year’s event.

What inspired you to become a chef?
I grew up in the industry and have loved cooking since I was a child. But really, my journey starts with my parents’ grocery store and bakery, which became my playground. I’d play with dough, crack eggs, fall into flour bins, and chat with customers—it was joyful and magical. That love for food only deepened over time.
Can you share a bit about your culinary background and how you got to where you are today?
After high school, I went straight to the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY, and I’ve never looked back. I spent seasons in Alabama and Nantucket, absorbing every bit of knowledge I could from a diverse mix of chefs. Eventually, I found my way back to DC and built on my foundations until landing at Eastern Point Collective, where I continue to grow and create at The Duck & the Peach.

Why is Food & Friends’ mission meaningful to you?
As someone who has seen loved ones battle—and both overcome and succumb to—cancer and HIV, the work Food & Friends does feels deeply personal and noble. When you’re in the fight of your life, meals can be the last thing on your mind. To have someone provide you with nutritious, lovingly prepared food is a gift that offers not just sustenance, but comfort, dignity, and hope.
What can guests expect from your dish at Chef’s Best?
A healthy option that doesn’t compromise on flavor. Think vibrant, nourishing, and full of life—just like the community we’re celebrating.

What does “Food Is Medicine” mean to you?
Food has the power to heal the body, and community has the power to heal the soul. When you share a wholesome, balanced meal with someone who lifts your spirits, that’s where the real magic happens. Your body is fueled, your mind is clear, and your soul feels lighter. That’s what gives you the strength to face anything—even the toughest battles.
Food Is Medicine isn’t just about nutrients; it’s about connection. And that connection is what helps people survive and thrive.
