What is Food & Friends?

We are neighbors helping neighbors. Every day, we plan, prepare and deliver over 2,800 nutritionally-tailored meals to adults and children living with HIV/ AIDS, cancer, diabetes or other life-challenging illnesses. We help our clients feel better, connect them to their community and empower them to manage their illnesses.

What geographic area does Food & Friends serve?

Food & Friends serves the greater D.C. area, ranging from Hagerstown, MD to Fredericksburg, VA. Our delivery area covers 5,300 square miles of Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia.

What resources will be provided to fundraisers?

  • Online resources such as logos, literature about Food & Friends and examples of recommended posts for social media and emails. Upon registration, you will be emailed a link to these items. You can access these items from the “Resources” tab on the Fundraise for Food & Friends website at any time.
  • Collateral with information about Food & Friends and our mission.
  • A personal fundraising page for you to share with your friends and family and keep track of progress.

How much does it cost to set up my own fundraiser?

It is free to begin your own fundraiser! However, sometimes it helps to make an initial self- donation to get the ball rolling and show your friends and family that this cause is important to you.

Are donations to my fundraiser tax-deductible? How will donors get their receipt?

Yes! Once a gift is submitted, the donor will receive an acknowledgement via email with a receipt and proof of a charitable contribution directly from Food & Friends.

How do I submit a cash or check donation?

A cash or check donation can be sent via mail or dropped off at our office in Northeast Washington D.C. When sending a cash donation, please have the donor include the name of your fundraiser in the attention line, and a note with their name, email address and phone number to:

Food & Friends will notify you when someone makes a cash or check donation on behalf of your fundraiser, and we will add the donation to your personal fundraising page.

How long can my fundraiser last?

There is no time limit! We recommend having a structure to your fundraiser — the more you plan, the easier it is to maximize your fundraising efforts. Having a deadline for donors to give will encourage them to participate in your fundraiser sooner, rather than later!

How do I boost my fundraising efforts if I get stuck?

Don’t panic! It’s normal for your fundraiser to experience some highs and lows in the number of gifts you are receiving. Here are a few helpful hints if you feel like you need a little boost:

  • Social media posts — try including a photo or link to a video, provided in your fundraising kit.
  • Email follow-up — everyone needs a reminder sometimes!
  • Encourage your network to forward your messages to their friends and family.
  • Contact the Food & Friends team. We’ve got lots of great ideas to share!
