Founded in 1988, Food & Friends provides medically tailored meals, clinical nutrition support, and friendship to people living with AIDS, cancer, diabetes, and other life challenging illnesses. Our team of seventy employees and thousands of volunteers delivers meals and hope to people living in the District of Columbia and multiple counties across Maryland and Virginia. There is no charge or income qualification for our services, which are rendered solely on the basis of medical need.
We seek a Chef to prepare a variety of soups, salads, and entrees for our clients. Working in our high-volume industrial kitchen, the Chef will:
- execute a daily prep list to prepare and package food items for clients;
- engage in large batch cooking and preparation of soups, salads, entrees, and occasional baked goods;
- implement and uphold safety and sanitary measures;
- contribute to menu planning and the recipe development process;
- assist with food storage and inventory; and
- foster an appreciative and welcoming environment for a diverse group of volunteers.
The schedule is Monday thru Thursday 11:30 AM to 8:00 PM and Friday 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM, with occasional weekend and holiday work. This is a rare and unique opportunity to join a caring team of culinary professionals serving community members in need.
The successful candidate will have at least two years of professional cooking experience in a high-volume facility and food safety certification. Additional requirements include advanced knowledge of large batch cooking techniques, familiarity with MS Word and Excel, superb time management, willingness to work alongside volunteers, good communication skills, and an appreciation for diversity. Physical requirements include the ability to lift 50 lbs., and the ability to be physically mobile and able to grasp, stir, stoop, walk, push, and stand for prolonged periods while maintaining proper balance. Offer of employment contingent upon a pre-employment drug test.
This position pays an hourly rate of $28.85.
