Communications Director

Founded in 1988, Food & Friends is the Washington region's leading authority on "Food is Medicine" and the only community-based organization delivering home-delivered, medically tailored meals and medical nutrition therapy to neighbors living with cancer, HIV/AIDS, and other life challenging illnesses.  Our team of 70 employees and thousands of volunteers deliver meals, friendship and hope to people living in the District of Columbia and multiple counties across Maryland and Virginia. There is no charge or income qualification for our services, which are rendered solely on the basis of medical need. Half of our $16.2M operating budget is supported by philanthropy, 30% from public funding and 20% from partnerships with managed care organizations.

Food & Friends seeks a seasoned communications professional and storyteller to lead the organization's communications and marketing, and support fundraising.  Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Communications Director will:

  • collaboratively develop and manage an integrated, organization wide strategic communications plan across a variety of platforms (print, digital, broadcast media, video);
  • manage media relations, including prepping leadership for interviews;
  • produce written, visual, and video-based content; develop talking points, op-eds, press releases, and donor impact reports;
  • provide strategic guidance for digital media campaigns highlighting fundraising initiatives, service programs, and organizational achievements;
  • supervise a Communications Manager focused on digital fundraising and communications, web site and social media;
  • lead monthly editorial meetings and maintain the organization-wide editorial calendar; and
  • manage the Board communications committee.
