Founded in 1988, Food & Friends provides medically tailored meals, clinical nutrition support, and friendship to people living with AIDS, cancer, diabetes, and other life-challenging illnesses. Our team of seventy employees and thousands of volunteers delivers meals and hope to people living in the District of Columbia and multiple counties across Maryland and Virginia. There is no charge or income qualification for our services, which are rendered solely on the basis of medical need.
Food & Friends seeks an Executive Sous Chef to help lead daily Kitchen operations and participate in food prep. Reporting to the Executive Chef and working closely with staff and volunteers, the Executive Sous Chef will:
- Collaborate with the Kitchen leadership team to ensure that preparations are made and implemented for the smooth production of home-delivered meals;
- Assist with menu planning, recipe development, new chef onboarding, ordering for all aspects of home-delivered meals, and enforcement of hygiene and sanitation standards;
- Perform as floor supervisor in absence of Executive Chef and Associate Executive Chef;
- Oversee and assist with standard culinary duties, including execution of daily prep list and oversight of portioning, packaging, production levels, and presentation of food;
- Conduct periodic quality control inspections;
- Lead development and implementation of Kitchen HACCP policies and procedures including food receiving, sanitation practices, maintenance of food temperature logs, and inspection of cooked meals.
- Welcome a diverse group of volunteers to work in the Kitchen and provide volunteer oversight as needed.
The schedule is Monday thru Thursday 11:30 AM to 8:00 PM and Friday 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM, with occasional weekend and holiday work. This is a unique and rare opportunity for a culinary professional to leverage their skills on behalf of a charitable mission.
Requirements include at least three years of culinary experience, one year of supervisory experience, and Food Safety Manager certification. Culinary degree strongly preferred. Other requirements include ability to manage a diverse staff, ability to plan menus and develop recipes, ability to use a computer and standard office software, and the ability to work with grace and patience under pressure in a deadline driven environment. Physical requirements include the ability to lift 50 lbs., and the ability to be physically mobile and able to grasp, stir, stoop, walk, push, and stand for prolonged periods while maintaining proper balance. Job offer contingent upon a pre-employment drug test.
The salary range for this position is $76,000 to $81,000. Food & Friends provides a generous benefits package including medical insurance, dental insurance, disability insurance, life insurance, a retirement plan, paid maternity/paternity leave, weekly short Fridays, and three weeks of paid leave for new hires.
