
Founded in 1988, Food & Friends provides medically-tailored meals, nutrition support, and friendship to people living with AIDS, cancer, diabetes, and other life-challenging illnesses. Our team of sixty-five employees and thousands of volunteers delivers meals and hope to people living in the District of Columbia and fourteen counties across Maryland and Virginia. There is no charge or income qualification for our services, which are rendered solely on the basis of medical need.
We have a full-time opportunity for an Opening Chef to join our talented culinary team.
Responsibilities include:
- opening the kitchen each morning at 5:00 AM;
- preparing a variety of entrees, soups, and salads;
- upholding safety and sanitary measures;
- assisting with food storage and inventory; and
- contributing to menu planning and the recipe development process.
The schedule is Monday thru Friday with the occasional Saturday. This is a unique and rewarding opportunity for an experienced chef to apply his/her culinary talents to the benefit of our community.
The successful candidate will have at least three years of professional cooking experience in a high volume facility and Food Safety Manager certification. Culinary degree strongly preferred. Must have a work history that demonstrates responsibility and dependability. Additional requirements include the ability to be physically mobile and lift up to 50 pounds, superb time management, ability and willingness to instruct and supervise volunteers, good communication skills, patience, and an appreciation for diversity. Must be willing to work some holidays. Offer of employment contingent upon a pre-employment drug test and proof of vaccination—including booster—against COVID-19 (exemption from vaccination requirement will be considered for disability or a sincerely held religious belief, practice, or observance).
