About Food & Friends
Founded in 1988, Food & Friends is a nonprofit organization dedicated to delivering medically tailored meals and nutrition counseling to individuals living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other life-challenging illnesses. With a passionate team of 70+ staff members and thousands of volunteers, we serve clients throughout Washington, DC, and across several counties in Maryland and Virginia. All services are provided free of charge and based solely on medical need.
About the Internship
We are currently seeking a Program Services Intern to support various aspects of our work across several departments—including Volunteer Services, Nutrition Services, Client Services, Development, Kitchen, and Delivery. This is a part-time, in-person, unpaid internship offering approximately 12–15 hours per week, designed to provide hands-on experience in nonprofit operations and client-centered service delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Help facilitate volunteer orientations and support volunteer recruitment and engagement
Coordinate and schedule nutrition counseling sessions for clients
Assist with donor mailings and other development activities
Provide hands-on help in our industrial kitchen and with delivery logistics
Accompany staff on meal delivery routes to clients’ homes, gaining direct insight into our mission in action
Perform administrative tasks to support program operations
Take on special projects and other duties as assigned
What We’re Looking For
At least one year of work or volunteer experience
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Interest in building confidence in public speaking and engaging with diverse populations; opportunities to lead orientations and represent the organization in group settings
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment
Must be 18+ years old
Comfortable with light physical labor (standing up to 3 hours, entering industrial refrigerators/freezers, etc.)
Open-minded, adaptable, and able to take initiative when faced with new tasks or challenges
Eager to bring fresh perspective and contribute ideas to improve programs and services

Internship Schedule
Internships are offered on a semester basis (Spring, Summer, and Fall/Winter):
Spring Semester: January 8 to May 16*
Summer Semester: June 1 to August 31*
Fall Semester: September 8 to December 19*
*Flexible start and end dates depending on student availability and organization needs*
Additional Information
All interns aged 19+ are required to complete a background check (cost covered by Food & Friends). Details will be provided during onboarding—please do not pursue a background check independently.
