Slice of Life to Help Deliver 1.75 Million Medically Tailored Meals to Seriously Ill Individuals Across the Washington Region
Food & Friends’ annual pie sale, Slice of Life, will provide the resources needed to deliver over 1.75 million medically tailored meals to neighbors living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other serious illnesses in 2025.
Washington, D.C. (October 10, 2024) – Food & Friends has officially launched its annual community-driven fundraising event, Slice of Life. Now in its 19th year, the 2024 campaign aims to sell 6,000 Thanksgiving pies and raise over $270,000, with each pie sold providing a full day of home-delivered, medically tailored meals for an individual living with a serious illness.
Proceeds from Slice of Life will help Food & Friends deliver over 1.75 million meals to more than 5,500 adults and children living with life-challenging illnesses across the D.C. metro area in 2025. Food & Friends remains the only community-based organization in the region providing home-delivered, medically tailored meals, groceries, and nutrition counseling for neighbors with life-challenging illnesses and their caregivers and dependents. While many may be eligible to receive food from anti-hunger providers, the complexity of their medical condition requires a specialized diet offered through our medically tailored meal program
“Slice of Life is a cherished tradition that brings our community together around the seriously ill neighbors at a time when they need our help the most,” said Executive Director Carrie Stoltzfus, MPH. “By purchasing pies, you are helping to provide thousands of individuals across the Washington region with the medically tailored nourishment and support they cannot find anywhere else. It is the easiest way to help us deliver Food Is Medicine to more people this holiday season.”
The official pie partner for Slice of Life is Whisked by Jenna, a local, woman-owned bakery celebrated for its award-winning treats, including being named Best Bakery and Best Pie in Washington City Paper’s Best of D.C. readers’ poll. The fundraiser offers six mouthwatering pie flavors: Apple Crumble, Classic Pumpkin, Sweet Potato, Nutty Pecan, Cherry, and Sea Salt Chocolate Chess Pie.
Teams and individuals can sell pies, which will be available for pickup on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at convenient locations throughout D.C., Maryland, and Northern Virginia.
