After a series of life-changing health challenges, Brendan found more than medically tailored meals through Food & Friends. He found stability, support, and a path toward better health.
In 2023, Brendan O’Donnell was hospitalized after a serious bacterial infection led to five surgeries and a diagnosis of LADA (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults), an insulin-dependent form of diabetes. The experience was overwhelming. “I felt very sad. It felt like my life was crashing down,” Brendan recalled. “Even though people were around me, I often felt alone.” Through it all, his sister Holly became one of his strongest sources of support, spending time with him in the hospital and helping him navigate a difficult new reality.
When Brendan’s doctors referred him to Food & Friends, he wasn’t sure what to expect. Today, weekly meal deliveries are something he eagerly anticipates. “I get excited every Thursday when the food arrives,” he said. “One of my favorites is the chicken and grits.” The meals are tailored to his medical needs and help remove the daily stress of deciding what to eat.
For Brendan, who has a disability and lives independently, that support is especially important. Before Food & Friends, convenience often won out over nutrition. “I used to order pizza or eat TV dinners,” he said. “Now I have healthy meals ready to go, and I don’t have to think about what I’m going to have for dinner.”
The impact on his health has been significant. Food & Friends’ medically tailored meals help Brendan manage his diabetes, follow his insulin routine, and maintain the healthy habits that keep him active. He has experienced fewer health complications and hospital visits and continues to play Special Olympics basketball. “The food keeps me in good shape so I can play basketball,” he said.
A key part of Brendan’s success has been the support of Food & Friends registered dietitian Jennifer Krasilovsky. “Jenn is always there for me,” he said. “If I’m having a bad week or my numbers aren’t where they should be, I can call her and she’ll work with me one-on-one.” Whether she’s helping him monitor his blood sugar or sharing practical nutrition tips, Jenn provides personalized guidance that gives Brendan confidence in managing his health.

For Holly, Food & Friends has been a lifeline not only for Brendan, but for her as a caregiver. After Brendan’s diagnosis, she became deeply involved in helping him manage a complex condition that requires careful attention to food, medication, and daily routines. She closely tracked his health and saw firsthand the difference that consistent, nutritious meals made. “When he doesn’t have Food & Friends, his A1C levels are much higher,” Holly said. “When he does have Food & Friends, they come down. We’re very grateful for that.”
Knowing that Brendan has healthy, medically appropriate meals delivered each week has eased a tremendous burden. Holly no longer worries whether he’s eating balanced meals, relying on fast food, or struggling to manage his diabetes alone. She also appreciates how simple the meals are to prepare, making it easier for Brendan to stay independent while still receiving the nutrition he needs. “It’s life-changing,” Holly said. “You’re getting a balanced meal that’s portioned out for you.”
Perhaps most importantly, Food & Friends has allowed their relationship to return to what it should be: a relationship centered on family, not caregiving. “Food & Friends has allowed us to be brother and sister again,” Holly said. “I no longer have to check on him about how he’s eating and managing his illness because I know you’ve got him covered.”
For Brendan and Holly, Food & Friends is more than a meal delivery service. It is a trusted partner that supports Brendan’s health and independence while giving Holly peace of mind, allowing both siblings to focus less on illness and more on enjoying life together.
