Lyniss’ Full Story
The warmth and energy of Lyniss Guildford is evident as soon as you meet her. A wide smile is soon followed by a stream of kind words and a joyful laugh.
Lyniss is living with HIV and receives bi-weekly deliveries of groceries from Food & Friends. She says the deliveries have gotten her to try to new foods, like beets, kale and asparagus. She loves the staples, like beans and rice, too. “I try to mix [the grocery items] and try different things. I’m going to try the mandarin oranges next,” she says. “I like to get variety with the food, that’s what I do.”
All in all, it’s a team effort. Food & Friends volunteers pack the bags and make the deliveries. Her son helps her prepare all the ingredients and keep up with her meals.
“You all are doing a great job. I truly appreciate it. I enjoy the service,” gushes Lyniss.
She appreciates the individual efforts that go into her deliveries. Over the phone, she described a recent delivery mishap when she was in the shower just as the delivery driver came. With the help of Client Services Representative Sara Gray, the driver was able to circle back later in his route and make sure Lyniss got her groceries.
Lyniss knows the work that goes into the food she receives. She even volunteered once and hopes to come visit again soon to spend time with Food & Friends staff and volunteers.
“I appreciate each and every one of you. I know what it’s like to stand on your feet all day and prepare things for the community. Maryland, D.C., Virginia, all the communities you’re trying to support. It’s not an easy job. I understand that. I love all of you.”
