On Thursday, April 23, 2026, Food & Friends joyfully gathered with supporters, staff, and volunteers for our annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner—an evening filled with gratitude and celebration of the people who power our mission every day. This year’s dinner was especially meaningful as we honored two extraordinary groups: our inspiring youth volunteers and our dedicated volunteers who have served with us for 30 or more years, while also sharing an exciting new milestone for our volunteer community.
We were proud to recognize our youth volunteers, whose contributions are nothing short of remarkable. While juggling school, activities, and family responsibilities, these young leaders generously donated their time before school, on weekends, during breaks, and over holidays. Their commitment and enthusiasm have played a vital role in the success of Food & Friends, and their impact reaches far beyond the meals they help prepare and deliver.

As we near Food & Friends’ 38th anniversary, the evening was also an opportunity to honor volunteers who have dedicated 30 or more years of service. In recognition of this milestone, we were excited to announce the inaugural class of the Heart & Soul Society, a new initiative recognizing volunteers whose long-term dedication truly embodies the spirit of Food & Friends. These individuals have been part of our story since our earliest days in 1988, standing alongside us as we grew from serving individuals affected by HIV/AIDS to supporting people with a wide range of serious medical conditions throughout the DMV region. Their unwavering commitment has helped shape Food & Friends into the organization it is today, delivering millions of meals each year and building a strong, compassionate community.
The inaugural members of the Heart & Society are:
Carole Preston
Lea Emerson
Bill Wooge
Anna Barnes
Stacey Brahmey
Daniel Rosman
Elisa Rosman
Karen Stierman
Together, the evening was a heartfelt reminder that our work is made possible by people who give their time, energy, and care so generously. We are deeply grateful to all of our volunteers and honored to celebrate the lifeblood of Food & Friends.
