On January 15th, 2025, we had the honor of welcoming Martin Luther King III and Arndrea Waters King to Food & Friends as we celebrated Dr. King’s 96th birthday.
During their visit, Mr. and Mrs. King emphasized the vital need for community service in difficult times. Through their Realize the Dream Initiative, the Kings are calling on communities nationwide to rally together and perform 100 million hours of service by MLK Jr.’s 100 birthday in 2029.

While at Food & Friends, the Kings met with volunteers and staff, packed medically tailored meals and groceries for neighbors, and reflected on our organization’s roots during the early days of the HIV/AIDS crisis.
Mr. and Mrs. King say that volunteering and service to others is not just about helping those in need; it’s about building bridges and fostering understanding between people. It’s an opportunity to step outside our comfort zones and connect with others on a deeper, more meaningful level.
We are profoundly grateful for their visit, which demonstrates how community can prevail over chaos and inspires us to continue raising the conscience of the nation through service.
