Founded in 1988, Food & Friends provides freshly prepared meals, nutrition support, and friendship to people living with AIDS, cancer, and other life-challenging illnesses. Our team of sixty employees and thousands of volunteers delivers meals and hope to people living in the District of Columbia and multiple counties across Maryland and Virginia. There is no charge or income qualification for our services, which are rendered solely on the basis of medical need.
We seek a Volunteer Services Intern to support and enhance elements of our Volunteer Services, Nutrition Services, Client Services, Development Department, and Kitchen and Delivery departments. This is a part-time, in-person, unpaid position. The internship will total roughly twelve to fifteen hours of work per week. The Volunteer Services Intern should expect to gain professional non-profit experience with one of the most prominent organizations in this field. The internship schedule (per semester) is as follows:
Spring Semester – January 1 to May 31
Summer Semester – June 1 to August 31
Fall Semester – September 1 to December 31

Duties will include facilitating volunteer orientations, recruiting, and cultivating relationships with volunteers, scheduling nutrition counseling sessions with clients, helping with mailings, administrative duties, providing delivery support, assisting in our industrial kitchen, and other duties as assigned.
The successful candidate will be attending college or have a BA/BS in a relevant field and at least one year of relevant work or volunteer experience, and must be at least 18 years of age. Additional requirements include an ability and license to operate a motor vehicle, excellent oral and written communication skills, strong public speaking ability, ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, and an ability to work with diverse populations.
Individual must be comfortable with going in and out of industrial refrigerators/freezers (both indoors and outdoors) and standing for up to 3-hour long periods.
